Feast your eyes on the best healthy food trends the new decade has to offer! You can either whip these up in the kitchen yourself or find restaurants who are on top of their foodie game and serving the latest and greatest on their menus.

Sometimes our meal-time routine gets stale and you need to try some new things to shake it up. While I don’t recommend you try all ten of these healthy food trends in one week, this blog post is meant to serve more as inspiration to try out new things and expand your knowledge.

If you're living or visiting California, check out one of my many city guides with restaurant recommendations.

Plant-Based Diet

For 2020 and beyond I predict that Instagram will be flooded with beautifully stylized photos of "plant-based" and "vegan" foodie pics.

Many health-conscious people are opting to remove meats and dairy from their diets. The benefits of a mostly plant-based diet include better weight management, more fiber, complex carbohydrates and food-based nutrients.

Speaking of nutrient-packed produce - the mushroom is having a moment in the sun with plant eaters. The mushroom is low in carbs and high in fiber, and it’s very easy to add them to salads and veggie dishes. Recipes featuring mushrooms have been trending, it’s actually a very forgiving fungus to cook - not to mention delicious!

Lavender Infused Food & Drinks

Pinterest predicted that edible essential oil recipes will be one of the most pinned foodie topics, which comes as no surprise since lavender is not only great to smell but also delicious to eat! Lavender is popping up in lattés, cocktails (and mocktails!), ice cream, cakes and there's even lavender milk.

You can purchase lavender syrup for infused lemonade, cocktails, mocktails and sparkling water. There’s also lavender tea!

Heirloom Produce

In particular I'm beginning to see a trend of "heirloom" foods such as tomatoes, blue eggs and purple potatoes. Not only do these heirloom foods give you a sense of eating something exotic, they're also very colorful and make for beautiful presentation on a plate.

Many heirloom enthusiasts will tell you that the produce grown from heirloom seeds has more flavor. I made a batch of cornbread with blue heirloom eggs, and the yolk was a deep amber color. See my cornbread recipes here!

superfood powders

Superfoods are considered “super” because of their excellent nutritional density. Many superfoods come in dietary supplements or powders you can add to your meals or smoothies.

There are also whole produce that are considered superfoods such as kale, avocado, blueberries, salmon, spinach, broccoli and ginger just to name a few.

My favoite superfoods:

Avocado Everything

Speaking of super foods, avocado makes the list for its healthy fats and high fiber. Avocados continue to be the darling of the health-conscious world, we just keep finding new ways to eat them. My recommendation for a healthy breakfast is avocado toast with a cup of matcha latte. When there’s a lot of green in your diet it’s not a bad sign!

In California there is literally an entire festival dedicated to avocados!

Root & Plant Infused Drinks

Rule #1 of healthy eating - always skip sugary sodas, energy drinks and juices with high-fructose corn syrup. Instead try these trending healthier beverage options. And of course, don’t forget to drink plenty of water!

  • Cold pressed green juice - Pressed Juicery is my favorite!

  • Ginger & lemon tea - I make this at home very often! Slice fresh ginger root into thin slices and boil in a saucer pan with water. Take off heat and add fresh squeezed lemon juice. You can also add a little honey too.

  • Chicory root tea - This is a new trend to hit the scene in 2020. The chicory root has become popular for its prebiotic properties which is great for gut health and weight loss. Shop chicory root teas!

  • Cucumber juice - Green juices have been around for a long time, but cucumber juice is specifically getting a lot of attention for its alkalizing and ultra hydrating properties.

  • Shrub - I’ve written about shrub several times on the blog because it is one of my favorite ways to make my sparkling water sweet and fancy. Shrubs are non-alcoholic concentrated fruit syrups mixed with a vinegar, and they’re a nutrient-dense and probiotic rich food. If you’ve got a sweet-tooth craving, add some shrub to your soda water for a delightful treat.

Probiotics & Prebiotics

Having a healthy gut flora is very important for your overall wellbeing, and it affects more than just your stomach in your body. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are healthy and essential for our bodies to function properly.

Prebiotics are a particular type of dietary fiber that serves as “food” for the healthy probiotics. A lot of superfoods also double as prebiotics - which is super convenient!

See my Beginner's Guide to Taking Daily Probiotics.

Cannabis-Infused Cuisine

Being that we live in California, pionering restaurants have started incorporating cannabis into high-end drinks and dishes. I'm not talking about your seedy "edibles" sold out the trunks of cars at concerts. This new culinary trend can be spotted at hip San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles restaurants. Order a cannabis-infused cocktail, beer or a mocktail to replace that Sunday brunch mimosa.

Sea Moss

Another big health trend emerging in 2020 is sea moss. It has been named the next big superfood because it’s exceptionally rich in nutrients and antioxidants. If you are wondering what it looks like, it does literally look like seaweed that has been plucked straight from the ocean.

The high-quality sea moss is odorless (no fishy smell) and is clear without any ocean debris. You can add sea moss to your protein smoothie to make it a superfood shake!

Raw Bee Pollen

Lastly on the list we have raw bee pollen, which I have heard so many health gurus rave about. Yet another food super dense in nutrients and antioxidants. Add a small sprinkle of bee pollen to your smoothie, acai bowl, yogurt, or even salads. **Pregnant women should avoid bee pollen.
