5 Romantic Weekend Getaways in California for Couples (Plus What to Pack)
Some of my favorite trips have been the shortest ones. A Friday afternoon escape, two nights somewhere with an ocean view or a vineyard outside the window, and a Sunday drive home with nowhere to be until Monday. California makes this kind of weekend easy, with fog-wrapped coastal towns, wine country and dramatic cliffs all within a few hours of most major cities.
Whether you are celebrating an anniversary, planning a surprise for your partner or simply need a reset together, these are the romantic California weekend getaways I keep coming back to, plus a simple packing list for making the most of them.
1. Carmel-by-the-Sea
Carmel feels like it was designed for slow, romantic weekends. The village is full of storybook cottages, tucked-away courtyards, art galleries and tasting rooms, and almost everything is walkable. Spend the morning wandering Ocean Avenue, then head down to Carmel Beach for a long walk on the white sand and stay for sunset.
Don't miss: A drive along 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach and dinner by the fire at one of the village's cozy restaurants.
2. Big Sur
For couples who love the outdoors, there is nowhere quite like Big Sur. The stretch of Highway 1 south of Carmel is one of the most dramatic drives in the country, with Bixby Creek Bridge, redwood groves and endless ocean views. Plan plenty of stops and do not rush it.
Don't miss: McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, where an 80-foot waterfall spills onto a beach below the cliffs. It is viewed from the overlook trail only, as the California State Parks page for Julia Pfeiffer Burns notes there is no beach access, but the view alone is worth the trip. Check road conditions before you go, as Highway 1 through Big Sur is subject to closures.
3. Mendocino
Mendocino sits on a headland above the Pacific, a small village of Victorian buildings, water towers and gardens that feels a world away from the city. It is quiet in the best way, which makes it ideal for couples who want to unplug.
Don't miss: The trails of Mendocino Headlands State Park, which wrap around the village with views of sea arches and hidden coves. Book a room with a fireplace and plan at least one morning with nothing on the schedule.
4. Santa Ynez Valley
If your idea of romance involves good wine and rolling hills, the Santa Ynez Valley north of Santa Barbara is hard to beat. Small towns like Los Olivos and Los Alamos are packed with tasting rooms and excellent restaurants, and nearby Solvang adds a dose of Danish charm with its windmills and bakeries.
Don't miss: A slow afternoon of tasting in Los Olivos, where many tasting rooms are within walking distance of each other, so you can leave the car parked.
5. Half Moon Bay
Just 45 minutes from San Francisco, Half Moon Bay is the easiest romantic escape for Bay Area couples. Rugged bluffs, wide beaches and a laid-back downtown make it perfect for a quick reset, and fall brings a festive feel with pumpkin patches and harvest events.
Don't miss: A walk along the Coastal Trail at sunset, followed by dinner overlooking the water.
What to Pack for a Romantic Weekend Getaway
The best weekend getaways feel effortless, and that starts with packing light and packing smart. This is the list I use for almost every couples trip in California.
Layers for coastal weather. The California coast can go from sunny to foggy and cold within an hour. Pack a light jacket, a cozy sweater and a scarf, even in summer.
Comfortable walking shoes. Most of these destinations are best explored on foot, from village streets to coastal trails.
One dressier outfit each. For the special dinner that makes the weekend feel like an occasion.
Something cozy for the evenings. Half the magic of a getaway happens in the room: breakfast in bed, a fire in the fireplace, a slow morning with coffee and an ocean view. We started packing matching pajamas for these trips as a little tradition, and a soft set of matching pjs for couples has become one of those small things that makes a weekend away feel different from an ordinary weekend at home. It also makes for a sweet photo to remember the trip by.
A good bottle of wine and two travel glasses. For a sunset picnic on the bluffs or a toast on the balcony.
A portable speaker and a downloaded playlist. Cell service can be spotty on the coast, especially in Big Sur and Mendocino.
Tips for Planning the Perfect Couples Getaway
Go midweek if you can. Thursday to Saturday or Sunday to Tuesday stays are often quieter and easier to book than peak weekends.
Book the room that matters. On a short trip, the place you stay is part of the experience. A fireplace, a view or a private patio is worth the splurge.
Leave room for nothing. Plan one or two highlights and let the rest of the weekend unfold. The best moments on a romantic getaway are rarely on the itinerary.
Ready for Your Escape?
From the cliffs of Big Sur to the vineyards of Santa Ynez, California is full of places made for slowing down together. Pick a destination, book the room with the view, pack something cozy for the evenings and give yourselves a weekend with nowhere else to be.
