We just returned from our whirlwind trip through the Greek Islands and let me tell you we've never ate so well! The Greek lazy summer days and nights are spent lounging in beautiful restaurants watching the sunset. Traditionally meals run very long and last for several hours as they bring you course after course of dishes. The Greek food is so fresh and savory with crisp produce and high quality ingredients. Although the Greeks love their meat, they also have a great variety of vegetables dishes as well. While I am not vegetarian, I generally only eat meat a couple days a week and many of my favorite dishes are plant based. My deep love for feta made Greece cuisine heaven for me because they have created so many ways to incorporate it into your meal!
Greek favorites definitely worth a taste:
- Fried feta with a honey glaze
- Olives and anything with olive oil
- Fried zucchini balls and tzatziki
- Spinach pie (buttery pastry stuffed with fried spinach and cheese)
- Fried eggplant and tzatziki
- Gyros and kebabs
- Greek spaghetti
The lazy summer evenings are spent lounging in beautiful restaurants with long meals lasting for hours. In Greece we learned that they don't bring you the bill after a meal in a restaurant. Guests sit and enjoy the atmosphere for so many hours that you need to hail down your waiter to settle your tab. But often when you do ask for the bill you end up receiving dessert instead!
