If you've got the wanderlust itch and are beginning to plan your next great adventure, let me make a marvelous destination suggestion. When you're looking to stay within the US but still want a foreign experience, Austin may be just perfect for you. I have travelled to many cities and I have never come across any place like it. From the food to the fashion, there's just so much to eat and see!
Austin is a melting pot for so many things that otherwise would seem completely unrelated. It's got the quirky hipster vibe of Brooklyn combined with the old west western vibe of Texas and then add the modern techie groove of San Francisco. You really don't know what to think of it all. They say "keep Austin weird" and weird is really the best word to describe it. As you walk through the streets your brain is on overload checking out all the details of "art meets irony." You'll find traces of "weirdness" in every place imaginable, from plastered on the walls to random street signs that serve no real purpose except to give you an internal chuckle. The city of Austin loves to use its words to tell you how it feels, and it's usually madly in love with everyone and everything. While cities like NYC hold their emotions close to their heart, Austin throws out an "I love you" with every turn of a corner. If you think you know what Austin has in store for you, you will quickly find out that this city cannot be predicted.
My top favorite places to hang in Austin (so far!):
- Get your taco fix at Torchy's Tacos.
- If the weather is beautiful, take a walk through the lush green grounds at Zilker Botanical Gardens.
- Satisfy your sweet tooth cravings with boozy ice cream at Amy's Ice Cream.
- When in Texas you gotta have some authentic southern BBQ. Make plans to eat at Black's BBQ and don't skimp on the "fixings".
- Grab a cocktail at the ultra hipster cool Rainey Street.
- Take your DIY skills to a new level and get creative at CRAFT.
- Embrace your inner weirdo at Spider House.
South Congress Style
South Congress is one of the main attractions in Austin and I just can't stop swooning over it. My love for crystal agates began about a year ago when I visited Austin's South Congress and came across all these beauties (look at my silver hair! It's so short lol). I have since began building my own at home agate collection and hope to add many more.
