After enduring too many days of bay area gloomy fog, we decided to take an impromptu road trip to a place that guarantees summer sunshine. Chico holds a special place in my heart because of all the fond memories it brings. After graduating high school in 2004, I moved to from Half Moon Bay to Chico to attend Chico State University. I spent five-fun filled years there and met many life long friends. This quintessential college town offers the perfect backdrop for Animal House-esque college days.
I especially love Chico during the scorching hot summer days. The heat lasts well into the night and I have distinct recollections of wearing tanks and tees outside well into the wee hours of the morning. I have so many great summertime memories of swimming in Bidwell Park, dancing all night at La Salles, shenanigans while working in the dorms and jumping fences for midnight swims in other people's pools. There was a kind of reckless abandonment that only comes at that time of your life before life's worries and responsibilities begin to take hold.
In the past I had always bunked with friends while visiting Chico but as life would have it most people have moved on to bigger cities to pursue their careers. So this time around we were guests of the lovely Hotel Diamond. In a fortunate twist of fate, an error booking online turned into an upgrade to the King Executive Suite. Our accommodations included a private balcony, living room, kitchen and master bedroom, not too shabby.
We spent two days cruising around campus, eating Celestino's pizza, swimming at One Mile, lunching at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co and snapping a million photos along the way. If you reside in the bay area and are looking for a quick summer escape from the city, I think you'd be surpirsed at what Chico has to offer :)
