If you've been following along on my blog then you may be familiar with my K-Cup gardening adventures. I have been dreaming of starting a garden for a long time but it's tough when you live in the city. Because of the lack of open soil space, I've gotten creative and found ways to grow my garden in large pots on my porch. I am happy to say that my tomatoes, squash and cucumbers are thriving and I can't wait until they're big enough to eat!
Last year I had the pleasure of attending the book signing of author and illustrator Heather Hardison. She is also the author of the fun illustrated food blog Illustrated Bites and now published author of the book Homegrown. Heather makes the concept of farm-to-table easily accessible for the everyday person. She walks you through the steps of growing produce for every season and then provides fun recipes to cook up the fruits of your labor. She hand-drew all the illustrations in her book and tried and tested all of her recipes. Her illustration style is inspired by vintage signage which brings nostalgic feelings (back to a time before microwave dinners and fast food!).
Homegrown really stands out because it covers a wide variety of topics beyond most cooking recipes. Hardison organized the book into four seasons which is very helpful because growing produce in the correct season will improve your chances of success. She even has a section on preserving your produce by canning, making jams, pickling and drying. Her simple to follow gardening guidelines include vermicomposting, the anatomy of healthy soil, starting from seeds, alternatives to pesticides and plant life cycles.
Hardison brought some of her original hand-drawn posters to the book signing. In the book making process, these are scanned into digital copies to create illustrations inside the book. To give a reference of scale, these posters are over 5 feet tall!
