I am jetting off to New York City for the umpteenth time but I am nevertheless very excited. NYC is the one place that I never feel like I get my fill and I'm always plotting my next adventures in the big apple.
With all the traveling I've done in my life you would think I'd have packing down to a T. But sadly I am a chronic over packer and in the past I felt the need to carry my entire closet with me when I traveled. Taking a page from the Unfancy blog on minimalism, I decided to built a mini travel capsule collection and keep my wardrobe under 15 pieces. I will be traveling for 12 days so this means I will have to pack pieces that can be styled multiple ways and worn on many types of occasions. I decided to go with a simple neutral color scheme of mostly black and white, built around my favorite clutch. Since it has an Aztec inspired print, the clothes have to be more on the simple side to avoid being too busy. NYC is scorching hot right now so light fabrics that breathe is a non-negotiable.
One rookie mistake I have made in the past is packing brand spanking new clothes and shoes, or clothes that I haven't worn in a long time. On the surface it seems like a good idea to debut new outfits while visiting exotic places but the reality is that you should always stick to tried and true. When you're far from your comfort zone you want to clothes that immediately make you feel at home (and clothes that you know will fit!).
The essential must haves (in order of appearance):
- upright spinner luggage with unique markings for quick identification
- day to night clutch
- long cardigan
- simple makeup palette
- slinky jersey dress
- day to night sandals
- the essential white tee in cotton/rayon
- day to night tailored shorts
- lightweight button up to class up any outfit
- grooming essentials
- comfy worn in denim and leggings
- vintage tee adding a pop of color
- Nike sneakers for all that NYC walking
- day to night cotton blend bodycon dress
- and finally, you can't go to NYC without bringing some Tiffany's (godmother gift for my little one)
Last year I spent the holidays in NYC and I posted about the perfect in-flight kit here. Now with my lighter luggage, I'm ready to fly the skies.
